As we come to the end of the year, we’ve updated TLL’s upcoming list of films with licensing potential. The biggest films of 2016 playing this holiday season are:
- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Disney): 12/16/16
- Doctor Strange (Disney): 10/20/16: $215.5 million in gross earnings, counting the most recent weekend for which data is available
- Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (Warner Bros.): 11/18/16: $183.1 million
- Trolls (DreamWorks): 11/4/16: $141.5 million
- Moana (Disney): 11/23/16: $119.8 million
We’ve previously noted that 2016 has seen many sequels and reboots fall flat with audiences, causing many observers to question whether consumers have hit an unanticipated limit when it comes to Hollywood’s franchise obsession.
It takes time, however, before those concerns are reflected in studio production schedules. For now, 45% of movies on the list are sequels and 14% are reboots. Only 8% are original films. Interestingly, the percentage of films based on TV series (9%) is slowly gaining as book adaptations (24%) decline. See the full list here.
