Andy Murray easily won his first round U.S. Open match the other night. But if the result was predictable, the footwear was anything but. Murray wore Adidas—this after signing a shoe deal with Under Armour in December. Shades of Raymond Weil brand ambassador Charlize Theron in a Christian Dior watch? Or Jessica Simpson’s dissing her own “JS” brand by proclaiming “True Religion” her favorite jeans?
Not really. The difference: Murray is wearing UA apparel and his contract lets him keep wearing Adidas until UA develops a tennis shoe meeting his specs. Murray trotted out the UAs in June but switched back a month later after getting trounced by Roger Federer at Wimbledon. And after beating world number 1 Novak Djokovic in August, Murray has apparently decided to stick with Adidas for the U.S. Open, prompting the following tweet from Adidas:
