Hit Show Friends Is Back … As A LEGO Set

The hit show Friends is back, as HBO Max announced May 13 that the long awaited one-episode special Friends: The Reunion, is will air on May 27—and LEGO fans can commemorate the occasion with a LEGO set that depicts the two adjoining apartments where most of the series was filmed.

LEGO Group has just revealed details of its new LEGO F.R.I.E.N.D.S Apartments Set, using a beefy 2,048 bricks that allow fans to build their favorite scenes from one of the most popular comedy series in history.

But first, the show.

Stars Jennifer Aniston, Courtenay Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer have all returned to the same soundstage where the original show was filmed, but they’re coming with reinforcements. In addition to the original core cast, Friends: The Reunion will also feature a large number of A-List guest stars, including David Beckham, Justin Bieber, BTS, James Corden, Cindy Crawford, Cara Delevingne, Lady Gaga, Elliott Gould, Kit Harington, Larry Hankin, Mindy Kaling, Thomas Lennon, Christina Pickles, Tom Selleck, James Michael Tyler, Maggie Wheeler, Reese Witherspoon and Malala Yousafzai.

Joey, Chandler, Rachel, and Phoebe come to visit Monica and Ross at their LEGO apartment.

The full-cast Friends reunion special was first announced in February 2020, with plans to film the special in front of a live audience, but the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in production being delayed twice.

“This has also given us more time to make it even more exciting and more fun than it would have been,” Aniston, 52, told Deadline last August. “I choose to see it as the glass is half-full that it got postponed. Look, we’re not going anywhere. You’re never going to get rid of Friends, sorry. You’re stuck with us for life, guys.”

Kudrow, 57, revealed the special is not a sequel to the show, but a cast reunion. “It’s not a reboot,” she said on the Literally! with Rob Lowe podcast. “It’s not like a scripted thing, we’re not portraying our characters. It’s us getting together, which just doesn’t happen a lot and has never happened in front of other people since 2004 when we stopped. I think it’ll be great.”

Leading up to the big reunion, TBS announced Thursday that it will air all 236 episodes of the iconic sitcom in their Friends: From The Beginning marathon. The special event began on Monday and will run through June 4.

In the meantime, dedicated fans could technically film their own Friends get-together with LEGO’s inspired F.R.I.E.N.D.S Apartments Set, which includes key scenes from the series. The set includes both the sets for Monica and Rachel’s apartment, and for Chandler and Joey’s apartment across the hall.

A similar set was released by LEGO in 2019, which portrayed the set for the Central Perk coffee shop where the cast spent much of their time when they were away from their homes. The sets include props like the Thanksgiving turkey that Monica wore on her head in one episode, or episode when Phoebe’s dollhouse went up in flames, among others. The new set even includes the adjoining hallway between the apartments, and, of course, all six of the main characters dressed in their most iconic outfits.

That would include Rachel’s plaid skirt; Ross’ overly tight leather pants; Monica in an apron; Phoebe in a classic floral outfit; Chandler in a suit and loud designer tie; and Joey wearing all of Chandler’s clothes.

“Following the success of the LEGO Ideas Central Perk set, we wanted to develop another tribute to this iconic TV show with a focus on the famous apartments,” said Anderson Ward Grubb, LEGO Set Designer said. “We worked directly from production photos of the set as well as watching and re-watching a lot of episodes so we could capture as many iconic moments as possible. One fun challenge was figuring out how to represent some aspects that change over the course of the show that appear in some episodes and not in others. I am looking forward to seeing if the eagle-eyed fans will spot them.”

LEGO The Friends Apartments set is available exclusively for LEGO VIP members on May 19, and for the general public after June 1, 2021.
