Cats may have taken center screen for most of the YouTube era (think Grumpy Cat, Pusheen, Venus the “Chimera Cat” and Colonel Meow), but Americans still love their dogs. Market researcher E-Poll surveyed kids and adults ahead of “National Dog Day” (Aug. 26) to come up with Americans’ favorite canine entertainment characters. The most-liked dog among both groups was Dug, from the Pixar/Disney film Up, followed by Scooby-Doo and Snoopy in the Top 3. Disney, which dominates the $11 billion entertainment/character licensing property type overall with its Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm properties also was top dog on the top dog list. Of kids’ Top 10 favorite dogs, 70% were Disney characters–Dug, Pongo, Buddies, Pluto, Tramp, Goofy and Lady. (Yes, Pluto and Goofy are both dogs.) Among adults, half of the top 10 were Disney dogs. Not ranked: Digital native “Mutant Giant Spider Dog,” despite being YouTube’s top trending video of 2014.
