While royalty rates for fashion brands tend to run below the industrywide averages, in part because of the very competitive landscape, they are often supplemented by additional charges such as market development funds and design services. Each can add 1–2 percentage points to the royalty rate.

Fashion properties skew toward long-term, branded programs with relatively few “hot” properties that can command higher royalties during short periods.

The glut of licensed brands and shrinkage of available retail space make for particularly intense competition in fashion. It is difficult for brands to get on the floor unless they are etablished labels like Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, and Donna Karan or hot designers.

In home goods, some very high-profile designers are said to get more than double typical royalties business-wide on goods sold through department and specialty stores.
