Analysis

Overall, this sector skewed slightly upward in the latter half of the 2000s, after a significant drop in 2004-2006, but has since plateaued.

For select fashion brands, the core royalty rates can run higher, with additional charges on top of that for market development activities and design services.

Some accessory categories, such as fashion and designer jewelry, typically run lower, since they build the brand’s visibility and are highly competitive when it comes to securing retail counter space. Goods aimed at the mass market carry royalties a point or two lower than merchandise for specialty distribution.

Headwear, which is largely composed of sports caps, skews higher because of the high margin on the item and the higher royalty rate for sports entities compared to most fashion properties. The same holds for luggage and travel accessories, licensed versions of which are often based on luxury brands and sold at department and specialty stores.
