Licensing Mysteries: Is Wendy’s About to Release a Real Life Krabby Patty?

September 5, 2024

By Gary Symons

TLL Editor in Chief

There’s a rumor floating around Bikini Bottom that Wendy’s is about to release its own version of the Krabby Patty.

The restaurant chain hasn’t confirmed the news, but in late August a Reddit post on the r/Spongebob subreddit claimed to show a leaked internal memo between Wendy’s and Paramount about creating a licensed “Krabby Patty Collaboration.”

It could be that Wendy’s was paying attention when Mr. Eugene Krabs, owner of the Krusty Krab, said, ““We shall never deny a guest even the most ridiculous request.”

That request may have led to this memo, which has not been verified as real, which states, “Starting on October 8, get ready to deliver the magic of cultural phenomenon SpongeBob SquarePants! To celebrate the show’s 25th anniversary this year, Wendy’s will introduce its own version of SpongeBob’s iconic Krabby Patty as part of an exclusive Krabby Patty Kollaboration with Paramount.”

The memo says the offering will be a limited-time offering meant for “adult consumers and fans” across the U.S., Canada, and Guam. As well, to wash that new burger down, Wendy’s is said to be introducing a new Frosty flavor called the Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty.

So, if the leaked memo is indeed real, what can Spongebob fans expect? Fortunately, the memo also includes critical details, saying the Krabby Patty will be a “premium cheeseburger” topped with “fresh produce and a secret Krabby Patty Sauce.” It will also include that Pineapple Under the Sea Frosty, which is the brand’s signature vanilla flavor “swirled with Pineapple Mango Puree.” Finally, the meal also includes Hot & Crispy fries as the “perfect compliment” to your subaquatic meal.

Restaurant Licensing: Crayola Brings Color to Wendy’s Kids’ Meals

If true, the memo says Wendy’s will be doing something the tightwad Krusty Krab owner would really hate; opening their wallets for a major media and advertising launch, including a TV advertising, new restaurant-based swag, a limited supply of SpongeBob stickers, and ‘earned media’, which, when you think about it, is exactly what they’ve got me doing!

The offering is expected to last from October 8 to November 11, if it happens at all. One publication, Indiewire, did manage to get a response from Wendy’s, but they’re treating the launch with the same secrecy as the long sought Krabby Patty recipe.

In their response, Wendy’s said, “While we can’t confirm what’s coming down Wendy’s innovation pipeline, we can share that we’re always looking to bring fans new menu items inspired by our fans’ cravings. We will be sure to keep you in the loop when we have more news to share.”

We at TLL are choosing to believe the news. As everyone in Bikini Bottom will tell you, “The only people who don’t like a Krabby Patty, have never tasted one!”

With any luck, us surface dwellers will finally get that chance.
