MGM and Fifth Season’s Live division are launching a licensed Films in Concert Series featuring MGM’s biographical-drama, Respect.

The Respect in Concert production will feature Aretha Franklin’s music performed live by The Detroit Symphony Orchestra alongside a showing of MGM’s film, Respect.

“We are extremely excited to partner with MGM on bringing to audiences and fans around the world, this acclaimed film featuring the amazing song catalogue of Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, accompanied by the world’s best symphonies,” said Matt Levin, Executive at Fifth Season Live.

“We’re thrilled to kick off 2023 with this event and look forward to curating the best film and music collaborations to provide audiences with an unforgettable experience.”

Respect is the true story of the acclaimed musician Aretha Franklin’s early life experiences and eventual rise to international stardom. The film follows the first thirty years of the singer’s life. Franklin was involved in the development of the film until her death in 2018.

As producers and licensors of the film for the symphonic format, Respect in Concert joins Fifth Season Live’s portfolio of more than twenty live music experiences based on licensed film properties.

Fifth Season is a global entertainment company that creates, produces and distributes feature films, TV series, and live events. The company was formerly known as Endeavor Content. In addition to its own studio productions, Fifth Season also handles the global distribution for several licensed entertainment series.

This partnership with Fifth Season Live is part of MGM’s goal to grow their live event portfolio, the company says. Metro Goldwyn Mayer is a global entertainment company focused on the production and global distribution of film and television content across all media platforms. The company owns one of the world’s largest libraries of film and television content.

“Creating a live concert event with Fifth Season for this critically-acclaimed biopic celebrating the life of Aretha Franklin is an opportunity for us to create another exciting touchpoint for fans of the music icon,” said Robert Marick, Executive Vice President at MGM. “Launching the very first concert in Aretha’s hometown of Detroit with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra is also the perfect way to kick off this tour.”

The Respect in Concert event premieres on Jan. 4, 2023 at Orchestra Hall in Detroit, Mich. The event will also be featured at venues across the US. Additional market locations for the event will be announced at a future date.
