Smile Makers, a leading global sexual wellness brand, has partnered with Mumsnet, the UK’s largest online community of mothers, to launch The Whisperer, the world’s first vibrator designed specifically for mothers.
The product was created with the help of Mumsnet’s licensing agent, The Point.888, to tackle the taboo of mothers’ sexuality and help new mothers reconnect with their bodies after childbirth.
According to a recent survey by Smile Makers and Mumsnet, 75% of mothers worry about reconnecting with their sexuality after giving birth and 80% had trouble finding relevant information. The main obstacles holding back mothers from resuming sexual activity include feeling self-conscious, lack of time and tiredness, and concerns over scar tissue.
The Whisperer, which was crowdsourced for its name and color by the Smile Makers and Mumsnet communities, is designed to prioritize new mothers’ sexual pleasure and help them reconnect with their bodies. It is available on the Smile Makers website with a month’s exclusivity at Beauty Bay, starting Feb. 1, 2023, for £34.95 ($43.24)
“We have been tackling taboos around female sexuality for over 10 years, and this was obviously an important one to remove,” said Cecile Gasnault, Brand Director at Smile Makers.
Justine Roberts, the founder of Mumsnet, added, “We hear frequently from women who are struggling to reconnect with their sexuality after having children, or who can’t find the support or information they need in order to do so. That’s why we’re glad to have been able to work with Smile Makers to create the first vibrator designed specifically for mothers.”
The project has been described as inspiring and exciting by Martin McLaughlin, Co-Founder at Story.1888, who said that mothers have been central to the development of The Whisperer, from focus groups to product testing and even naming of the product.
The collaboration between Smile Makers and Mumsnet represents a step forward in breaking the taboo surrounding mothers’ sexuality and promoting sexual wellness for new mothers.
