Electronic Arts and the NHL have released a new entry to the EA Sports NHL franchise featuring players from the IIHF Women’s League.
For the first time in the video game franchise’s history, IIHF World Women’s Championship members, such as Team Canada’s Sarah Nurse, can be included in the same Hockey Ultimate Team as male players.
The IIHF World Women’s Championship is an international women’s hockey tournament governed by the International Ice Hockey Federation.
“The NHL franchise has always prided itself on being one of the best team-based sports game experiences you can enjoy with friends, whether that friend is across the couch or the globe,” said Mike Inglehart, Creative Director at EA Vancouver.
“This year, NHL 23 continues to bring fans closer together with cross-platform matchmaking and the expanded feature set highlighting women’s hockey.”
In addition to the inclusion of women’s league players to the Hockey Ultimate Team mode, franchise mode customization has been expanded and more than 500 new playmaking animations have been added. Players can also compete in a variety of rotating game themes with three new tiers of rewards based on win streaks for the HUT Rivals mode.
In addition, cross-platform matchmaking will be coming to the game in November 2022. Cross-platform matchmaking will allow players to challenge opponents on the same console generation online for the World of Chel and HUT modes. This will create larger player pools and shorten queue times for online matches.
Following the upcoming November update, players who started playing the game on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One will be able to transfer their HUT Team’s progress to the PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S consoles.
EA Sports NHL 23 was developed by EA Vancouver and EA Bucharest using the Frostbite game engine. Electronic Arts is a global game company that develops games, content and online services for consoles, mobile devices and personal computers.
Founded in 1917, the National Hockey League consists of 32 Member Clubs from more than 20 countries across the globe. The NHL streams hockey games internationally through its official website. It also broadcasts hockey games on TV in more than 160 countries and territories through its rights-holders.
