The winner of the second Licensing Sustainability Award will be named at the upcoming SPLiCE New Year Solutions conference in Los Angeles on March 3.
The LSA is an award honoring programs within the licensing industry that either reduce pollution and waste, protect the environment, and/or reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The LSA is a joint project by SPLiCE and The Licensing Letter.
“SPLiCE is an organization founded on the principles of compliance with best practices, and there are no practices more important to our future than working to protect and improve our environment,” explained SPLiCE CEO Kimberly Kociencki. “Sustainability is a core value of our organization and its membership, so we felt it was important to honor those companies that go above and beyond to preserve our planet.”
The LSA is awarded quarterly, and the first recipient of the award was Mattel for its comprehensive Play Back program, which allows consumers to easily return toys for recycling or reuse.
LSA judges say the winner was chosen because of the tremendous impact its programs will have on reducing plastic in the waste stream.
TLL Editor in Chief Gary Symons will be announcing the award and providing a background presentation at the conference.
“We considered several programs within the licensing industry, and there are many that deserve to be highlighted, but in the end we had to narrow it down to a single program by a single company,” Symons says. “In doing so, we chose a program that didn’t just impress; it literally represents a sea change that will positively impact hundreds of other licensing companies, and will eliminate billions of plastic toys and packaging from the global waste stream.
“It is rare that we see a program have such a massive impact in such a short time, and we are thrilled to be honoring this company on March 3rd.”
The SPLiCE New Year Solutions Conference is a hybrid event in which some SPLiCE members and its affiliates will attend virtually, and others will attend the in-person event in Los Angeles. This year the event will be held at the Sheraton Universal Hotel in Universal City, just steps away from the NBCUniversal HQ and Universal Studios Hollywood.
