June 16, 2023

PortAventura World and Sony Pictures Entertainment have launched a licensed roller coaster attraction based on the action movie and video game franchise, Uncharted.
“This attraction is the outcome of a pivotal agreement with an industry giant in entertainment, Sony Pictures,” said PortAventura World managing director, David García. “The alliance permits us to extend our global footprint, by means of a product that is truly state-of-the-art on an international scale and stands equal to the finest attractions globally. With this new ride, our guests can anticipate an unmatched, innovative experience that enhances the diversity and quality of attractions offered,” García added. “All of this reinforces our position as one of the premier tourist destinations in both Europe and the world.”
Created in collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment, Intamin Amusement Rides and Sally Dark Rides, Uncharted: The Enigma of Penitence is a multi-dimensional indoor roller coaster that features five LSM launches, a lateral drop, multiple audiovisual effects, and more.
In addition, Uncharted: The Enigma of Penitence offers a VR roller coaster experience for visitors with functional disabilities who are unable to ride the real-world attraction.
“The opening of Uncharted reinforces our role as a disruptor in the entertainment industry through the implementation of cutting-edge technology,” said PortAventura World development director, Luis Valencia. “The characteristics of its multi-dimensional journey, which has plenty of surprises with its many twists and turns through special effects and audiovisuals, will continue to amaze our visitors and attract further interest in our resort. In addition, the immersive story-telling is really exciting and promotes very positive values,” Valencia added. “We can’t wait for everyone to try it and are convinced that it is one of our most stimulating experiences.”
The attraction will also feature a themed retail area with a wide variety of licensed Uncharted merchandise.
The Uncharted movie follows the treasure hunters Nathan Drake and Victor Sully Sullivan as they adventure across the globe to unravel an ancient mystery and recover a lost stash of treasure. Based on the PlayStation video game franchise, the live-action film was released by Sony Pictures and its Columbia Pictures subsidiary in 2022.
“The opening of Uncharted, the ride, is a testament to PortAventura’s expertise in attraction development,” said Sony Pictures EVP, Jeffrey Godsick. “A display of safety and care with the IP was evident from fabrication through completion. PortAventura World is known for adventure and our global teams, including PlayStation, have worked collectively to ensure all guests can look forward to becoming Uncharted explorers.”
PortAventura World Parks & Resort is a family holiday and leisure destination located near Barcelona.
The resort destination includes a large theme park, five themed PortAventura Hotels, one luxury 5-star PortAventura Hotel, two external hotels, the PortAventura Convention Centre, a licensed Ferrari Land amusement park, and an aquatic-themed park.
