Metaverse Licensing: The LEGO Group and Epic Games Announce New LEGO Fortnite Mode

December 4, 2023

The LEGO Group and Epic Games are launching a co-branded survival crafting game for the Fortnite metaverse platform called LEGO Fortnite.
The co-branded online game will enable players of all ages to explore open digital worlds that feature design details from both the Fortnite game and LEGO building experiences.
“The LEGO Group has captivated the imagination of children and adults through creative play for nearly a century, and we are excited to come together to build a space in the metaverse that’s fun, entertaining, and made for kids and families,” said Epic Games founder, Tim Sweeney.
LEGO Fortnite will be the first online play experience to debut for the multi-year licensing partnership between Epic Games and the LEGO Group that was first announced in April 2022.
The two company’s long-term partnership is intended to serve as a collaborative initiative to develop online digital spaces for children and families in the metaverse.
The LEGO Group and Epic Games previously outlined three main principles for their licensing agreement to help ensure that the digital spaces they develop are safe and entertaining for children and youth.
These three principles include prioritizing children’s safety and wellbeing, safeguarding children’s privacy, and providing tools to both children and adults that allow precise control over their individual digital experiences.
“Kids enjoy playing in physical and digital worlds and move seamlessly between the two,” said LEGO Group CEO, Niels B. Christiansen. “We believe there is huge potential for them to develop life-long skills such as creativity, collaboration and communication in both. We have a responsibility to make digital play safe, inspiring and beneficial for all, and just as we’ve protected children’s rights to safe physical play for generations, we are committed to doing the same for digital play,” Christiansen added. “We look forward to working with Epic Games to shape this exciting and playful future.”
Officially launching on Dec 7, 2023, the LEGO Fortnite game will be available to players from inside the Fortnite online gaming platform.
Fortnite is currently available on numerous systems such as PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, Android, PC, and cloud-based game streaming services.
Created and developed by Epic Games, Fortnite has over 400 million registered accounts across the globe.
The gaming platform features several distinct modes of play including a player-vs-player Battle Royale mode, a cooperative mode called Save The World, and a sandbox mode called Fortnite Creation.
In addition to the upcoming launch of LEGO Fortnite, Epic Games also recently announced a new rhythm game mode called Fortnite Festival and an arcade racing mode called Rocket Racing.
