Lush and SpongeBob Team Up to Reduce Plastics in the Ocean

July 4, 2023

By Allison Watkinson

TLL Reporter

Lush and Paramount Consumer Products have teamed up on a limited-edition beauty collection for SpongeBob SquarePants: Operation Sea Change.

Launched in 2022 by Nickelodeon and Paramount CP, SpongeBob SquarePants: Operation Sea Change is a multi-year ocean conservation and sustainability initiative that aims to reduce plastic pollution and biodiversity loss.

The initiative provides funding to global non-profit partners, sponsoring international ocean clean-up programs, promoting sustainable products, and providing education on reducing plastic pollution.

“Partnering with Lush on creative, fun and plastic-free products is the perfect way to make an additional impact with the SpongeBob SquarePants: Operation Sea Change initiative to protect the world’s oceans and its inhabitants,” said Paramount Consumer Products EVP, Veronica Hart. “The vibrant world of SpongeBob SquarePants lends itself perfectly to the colorful world of Lush, and we’re so excited to work together to bring awareness to this issue.”

Founded in 1995, Lush is a cosmetics development and manufacturing company that specializes in cruelty-free, sustainable, and eco-friendly beauty products.

Lush currently operates in 49 countries worldwide through over 900 retail locations, 38 ecommerce websites, and a global app network.

”We love soap,” said Lush creative director, Melody Morton. “So, to create a plastic free range of products on behalf of SpongeBob SquarePants, an iconic character, series and brand, representing an undersea world that we are all trying to protect, was an obvious fit for Lush. We’re thrilled to partner with Paramount Consumer Products and Nickelodeon on SpongeBob SquarePants: Operation Sea Change. We had so much fun with this collaboration and the Krabby Bathy is a new innovation for us — a hybrid soap, bath bomb and bubble bar,” Morton added.

“We think the fragrances are extra special, think tropical, pineapple and coconut, dreamy combinations that are unique to this range.”

The limited-edition Lush Cosmetics x SpongeBob SquarePants collection features six plastic-free and environmentally friendly bath, shower, and skincare products.

The products included in the collection are made to look like characters and items from the Spongebob franchise such as Squidward Tentacles, Patrick Star, Krabby Patties, the Pineapple house, and Spongebob Squarepants himself.

Created by Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants is a comedy franchise that began as an animated series for Paramount’s Nickelodeon kids’ channel.

Since its initial debut in 1999, the franchise has expanded to include multiple theatrical releases, licensed consumer products, interactive media, a Broadway musical and more.

The limited-edition SpongeBob SquarePants x Lush collection launched exclusively on the Lush app, website and stores on June 29, 2023.
