Mattel Hopes to Repeat Barbie Success With Dolls from ‘Wicked’

August 14, 2024

By Gary Symons

TLL Editor in Chief

Mattel is hoping for more movie magic, as it has just released a full line of fashion dolls inspired by Universal Picture’s upcoming live action flick Wicked.

The toyco had previously announced singing dolls representing the main characters Glinda (played by Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo). They are now being joined by a wider collection that includes different versions of those characters in different iconic looks from the film, as well as a doll in the likeness of the character Nessarose (Marissa Bode).

The new deluxe doll portraying the character Elphaba from the upcoming Universal Pictures film Wicked.

Deluxe fashion dolls of the leads feature Glinda wearing her signature pink ball gown, and Elphaba wearing a purple dress and sheer black cape ($39.99 each). The Nessarose doll comes with a manual wheelchair rendered in gold, and has an MSRP of $24.99.

The doll line’s release comes about two months prior to the film’s release.

The singing dolls in the collection, which were previously announced, created a bit of a sensation when Grande and Erivo saw them for the first time, with their reactions caught on video. As well, the first true ‘reveal’ of the song ‘Popular’ came when the singing ability of the doll was demonstrated. That video has since been taken down, but thrilled fans of the Wizard of Oz franchise who are eagerly awaiting the film’s November release.

The singing dolls in the collection highlight memorable moments from the Wizard of Oz prequel. Donning evening wear, kids can hear Glinda sing “Popular” and Elphaba sing “Defying Gravity.” The set of the fashion dolls, each priced at $24.99, feature Glinda and Elphaba dressed up for a party depicted in the movie.

The film also has potential to provide Mattel with a welcome boost in sales revenue. While Wicked has not yet enjoyed the attention the Barbie Movie enjoyed prior to its release, the pre-release buzz is strong, and Mattel’s experience with the Barbie film was extremely positive. In February of this year, Mattel executives on an earnings call said the company received a $150 million revenue boost from Barbie, including direct movie participation, movie-related toy sales, and consumer products.

The Wicked film hits theaters Nov. 22. To view Mattel’s full Wicked fashion doll collection, visit the company website.
